What is an aswang?

Aside from being the most unfortunately named of mythologicial creatures (12 year-old boys will get a kick out of it) this legend from the Phillipines has much in common with the traditional vampire, with the exception that it also has a fondness for eating babies.

The creatures have been the subject of films before, but this one by Erik Matti looks a bit more stylish and entertaining than its predecessors. An action thriller where a family stands against a clan of the fiendish ghouls, Tiktik was filmed completely against a green-screen but it could stand a chance of being a fun creature feature. Let’s hope that Matti delves into the mythology and gives us a reason beyond their name to find the aswang interesting.
