After The Grey, it’s exciting to hear the director Joe Carnahan may be Fox’s choice to helm the next Daredevil reboot. While his wilderness survival thriller was one of this year’s very best films, Carnahan isn’t a new hand at action, and his gritty Narc shows promise for Daredevil’s world of Hell’s Kitchen criminals and vigilante heroes.

What kind of Daredevil would we see if Carnahan stepped into the director’s chair? Fox is saying they want to deliver a “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller” that might actually follow the arc Miller himself created when writing the character. If that’s true–and that statement isn’t just a tactic to draw in the comic geek contingent–then this could be something quite special, as Miller’s work on Daredevil was a career high point for both Matt Murdoch (Daredevil’s alter-ego) and the writer himself.

Like the recent reboot of Spiderman at Sony, part of this current rat-race to get Daredevil into production is Fox’s attempt to use the character before the rights revert back to Marvel. Marvel is  willing to work with Fox, creating a trade of sorts that would swap Daredevil for the rights to Fantastic Four characters Fox currently owns. Those characters? Galactus and the Silver Surfer.

I’m not as interested in all of this studio maneuvering as I am in seeing these characters get good, solid films that honor their legacy in the comic books. Will that happen? Who knows for sure, but with Carnahan replacing the less-than-interesting David Slade for Daredevil, and Galactus and Silver Surfer being distanced from the execrable Fantastic Four franchise, things definitely look like they are on the right check.
