I’m not very familiar with the Dragon Nest videogames, so I don’t have the proper background to critique the trailer for this film, but my immediate reaction is that it plays like a demo reel and cut scenes for a game itself. Much like Final Fantasy: Advent Children, this Chinese production–created by animation studio Mili Pictures–doesn’t seem as interested in telling a new story as it does expanding the worlds, characters and actions of the game.
I imagine that those who are not fans of the material or the MMORPG this is based off of will be mostly bored by it, seeing it as exciting as watching someone else play a video game. What will fans think, though? Certainly this kind of thing is more interesting when one is holding the controller and interacting with other players. Terry Izumi, a writer for the original Dreamworks Shrek film, has scripted this installment and has plans for two more films, creating a trilogy.
What do you Dragon Nest fans think of this?
For those interested in the plot, here’s the synopsis:
50 years ago (from the present time in game), Black Dragon appeared in the once peaceful land of Altera. Under the order of the King, the young Geraint, Argenta, Velskud and other legendary heroes assembled various forces to form the Dragon Slaying Alliance. This incident was widely referred as the First Dragon Invasion by the generations to come. However, what exactly happen during this incident? Where are these heroes after the dragon invasion? The movie will reveal the story and mysteries behind this epic historical event.
