Director of Top Gun dies in apparent suicide.

According to the Associated Press, Scott, 68, climbed a fence on the bridge and jumped around 12:30 p.m. One report quoted a coroner’s report that said Scott jumped “without hesitation.”

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn told the Daily Breezethat a suicide note was found inside Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge.

7 am this morning: Police found a suicide note in Scott’s office, reports the Los Angeles Times. Its contents were not revealed.

Authorities used sonar equipment to find Scott’s body in the port’s murky waters. Divers recovered his body about 4:30 p.m.

At the time of his death, he had recently completed filming onOut of the Furnace, says the Times, a drama he was producing that was due out next year starring Christian Bale. Scott was also preparing to produce a science-fiction drama called Ion and had served as executive producer on Stoker, set for release in March.

Known for his trademark red baseball cap, the British-born Scott was the brother of director Ridley Scott, and the two shared producing credits on the CBS dramas The Good Wifeand NUMB3RS.

Scott was married three times and had twin sons with his third wife, actress and model Donna Wilson.

A source close to Scott told ABC news today that he had inoperable brain cancer. This does shed a little light on the reasoning behind his decision to take his own life.

This is a terrible loss. My heart goes out to his family and friends. RIP Tony.

  1. This is truly sad. Pulled up the site today and saw this. Very unfortunate. Heart goes out to his brother Ridley and his wife and children.

The guy was very good at making action thrillers. Crimson Tide and Unstoppable were two of my favorites of that particular genre. He’s got several projects on the burner. A sad day for film fans.

PCN will put together a Tony Scott retrospective for later. Thanks for putting this up James!

  2. Can’t say I was a big fan of his films (though I really liked True Romance) but still very sad to hear this about anyone. Someone suffering to the point that this is their means of getting it out is really upsetting and at his age makes me wonder if he was suffering with something in his personal life outside of just depression. Thanks for putting this up James

  3. That is what threw me. His age. He had a decent career filled with a lot of very popular films. I know it is none of my business but I am very curious as to what the note said. Very sad.

  4. Just read online that he had inopparable brain cancer. So, I can totally understand his reasoning now.Not that it makes it better. But I understand
