Never in a million years did I think I’d be obsessed with a formulaic USA network dramedy about an ex con now working for the FBI.  But Matt Bomer helps.  A lot.

I know it’s halfway through the season, so I won’t review the rest of the show up until this point because SPOILERS!  Unfortunately not one of my favorite episodes this week story-wise, but absolutely my favorite of the season dialogue-wise.  The writers have dropped back into their formula of solving one crime per episode and neatly tying up loose ends by the 40 minute mark, but the humor on the show is getting progressively better through the dialogue as the season continues.  Surprisingly, my favorite scenes are now those between Mozzie and The Suit.  In tonight’s episode, I heard one of the best exchanges of dialogue I’ve heard on TV all year.  And I watch Game of Thrones like a boss.

As Mozzie is decoding the phone records of that evil slag Landon Shepherd (who WILL be back later this season, I’m sure), Moz makes a comment about how former mayor Giuliani never returns his phone calls.  The following exchange happens:

Burke: Where did you come from?!

Mozzie: 45 years ago an enigma gave a paradox a very special hug.

Absolutely the best thing Moz could have responded with.  I will now sit on this quote for YEARS until the right opportunity presents itself.

Another highlight from tonight’s episode was the idea of Peter attempting to be a sexual creature with Sara Ellis.  Now a good friend of mine here in LA happens to be the one who cast Tim DeKay on this show four years ago, so therefore I feel a personal connection to Burke (obviously).  But I don’t care how personal it is, no one should ever be allowed to be that awkward on TV.

In general I like where the show is going this season, mostly because the writers did not make the crucial mistake of leaving Neal on the island the whole season.  They brought him back to New York as quickly as possible so that they could start the “where’s Neal’s dad?” storyline that they’ve chosen to run with all season.  Personally I’m intrigued about the possibility of Neal’s dad being a corrupt cop.  It makes Neal’s being an ex con turned good guy working for the FBI to bring down real criminals much more legit.  I recently discovered that people with traumatic pasts tend to have much more of a purpose in life than those who don’t, so to me, Neal’s dad being a bad cop makes Neal’s change of heart much more believable.

I highly recommend giving this show a try, but I must insist you start from the beginning.  It’s certainly possible to watch a few episodes here and there though, because the “solve one crime per episode” formula works so well for this show.  I have to say that Neal and Peter’s relationship is one of the most complicated and interesting character relationships on TV right now, and I cannot wait to see where it ends up this season!
